They are not like God, as God is all powerful.  They gained the knowledge of good and evil though.  

Correct. They didn't get to eat from the second tree because god fucked them out of the garden before they got the opportunity to do so. God was scared enough to take action "lest they become like us". So what was god afraid of? Why not let Adam and Eve become like one of "them"? That is his stated goal.

The "us" is all the other gods in the Canaanite pantheon.  Remember the jews were polytheistic until after the returm from Babylon.
