They know a threat. It's one of the strongest clues for the early history of judaism, in that it grew out of the wider Canaanite pantheon (which included the Phoenician gods).
And the Babylonian gods. Yahweh was the 40th son of El Elyon, the chief Babylonian god.
I'm not sure they knew that, but the tablets found at Ashurbanipal (the Royal Library) in the 1800's revealed a lot.
