Barely 20 years old. Had enough money to do a West to East coast city to city summer travel vacation. Ended up Back Packing around the Great Northwest. Had only enough money to hitchhike back to the Southwest U.S. I was near the Washington / Idaho / Canadian border when it was time to turn back. Filled my canteen with the coldest, remotest, clearest stream water. By the time I got to the highway I was shitting my brains out. Any water or food I consumed spewed uncontrollably out of me within 30 minutes. Stuck my thumb out and waited. Had to frequently ditch into the brush and miss a ride. When I did get a ride it was usually a trucker or lost soul looking for somebody to talk to. Me, I had to yell "Pull over!!!" every 30 minutes."What?" "Pull over!!!" Then "Are you OK!" "No!" They were all nice about it. Did not make it to the Southwest. Made it to Eugene, Oregon and had to call my folks for money to fly back. My Kerouac summer!
