Here is a simple example.
Working out the most efficient way to link points is something that can take some very fact computers a while to do.
For example the most efficient way to link the cities of England is not just straight lines between each city but branching at points along the way.
Now the fastest way yo find out the most efficient road system is to hammer nails into a board in the positions of the cities leaving a fair amount of nail sticking out. Put the board in some soapy water and take out. Surface tension would have produced the most efficient system in basically soap bubbles.
Complex, functional with basic physics.
