We actually know when one conspiracy theory started. While Senator Gerald P. Nye was holding forth before a large crowd of America First people on Dec. 7th, 1941, he was handed a note saying Pearl Harbor had been attacked. He continued with his anti-war rant. After he was done he went back stage and was giving all available details on the attack. His response was "He (FDR) must have tricked them!"
