Neither make any sense at all. Revenge does not make right. It is a very primitive concept based on raw emotion. Hurting the one who hurt me will not ease my pain. Better to rehabilitate him/her so he/she will not do it again.

An enlightened being does not demand, "justice" against his attacker but correction. Why rage against a hurricane? Just avoid them or develop a way to prevent them. Striking back at one is childish. This revenge-think by itself exposes Christianity as a very primitive, very childish idea.

But since you asked for 5 problems....

2. God is supposedly all-knowing. This means that when he created me, he KNEW what my life path would be. If my life-path leads me to Hell, why would he create me in the first place?

3. God is supposedly all-knowing. This means that when he created humanity, he knew exactly what the results would be. Why would he blame his creation for the shortcomings he KNEW they would have? Pretty silly, right?

4. Why is it that the religion people follow is determined by where they were were born? Christians are predominately born and raised in the West. Muslims are predominately born and raised in the Middle East. Buddhists are born and raised in the Far-East. Hindus are born and raised in India.

How is it that "The Truth" is determined by where you were born and raised? The Muslim in Saudi Arabia believes with the same fervor as the southern Baptist Christian in Mississippi, USA. Why is it that religious conviction is determined by where you were born? Sounds like brain-washing to me.

Atheists are EVERYWHERE!

5. Religion has FAILED! It is the secular world that has promoted peace, generated wealth for all and revealed the way to true knowledge through science.

Thank you AFTT47

My question aims at getting a few atheists to question believers as to why they find the existence of God unpersuasive from a scientific perspective, and why they find the Bible is not scientific ( which I agree-- the Bible is NOT scientific ). But I want to get atheists to respond, not myself. Im already satisfied with my own thinking and research for the past decade.

If you are satisfied with your own thinking, I don't think there is anything much any of us could add to improve the situation.

Hi Thank you, but you did not get what I wrote earlier on Page 1 of this thread. I said I was doing an exercise to teach my Christian community and I wanted to get questions from atheists. So far, some of the others have responded with some questions I was looking for. Thank you again.

Hi,

As atheists, what would be the top 5 questions/critiques you would have for believers against God or the Bible within a scientific framework?

I guess my critiques wouldn't be so much about God or the Bible as about how some believers interpret those things.

In looking briefly at your blog and the BioLogos site, I'd say you have a good understanding of the issues that concern most atheists. I think you're right to address young-Earth creationists and evolution deniers.

Also it might make sense to argue against that minority of Christians who refuse medical treatment and rely only on prayer. That is an unfortunate misreading of the Bible, it seems to me.

I see you've made one blog entry about hermeneutics, and that seems like a good idea to me. A lot of trouble seems to come from the (mostly modern) idea that the Bible has to be read literally, as if it were a science book, and not a collection of parables and challenges. This over-simple view is a minority position when seen in the whole history of the church. No doubt some of the worst science-deniers aren't interested in anybody beyond their favorite local preacher, but it might make a difference to some people to see that many of the most influential people in the history of Christianity were NOT in favor of taking every story in the Bible as if it were an account of real history. Nor were most important Christian thinkers at all opposed to science. The idea that Christianity and science are incompatible is a surprisingly modern view, and not built into the religion at all.

Again, citing important people from history probably won't influence anybody who loves Ken Ham, but just making people aware that Christians in good standing have not traditionally denied science could open some minds.

Your doing this from within the framework of Christianity seems far more likely to have an effect than arguments from us non-believers. I wish you well.

Thank you Balaqua. This is very fair and accurate towards my current stance. I will get some questions from the others who have responded the way I was looking for.
