Conspiracy theories bring comfort to many people. Instead of facing a chaotic world, ruled by incompetence and irrationality, you can believe, that it's all being controlled by "bad" people and organisations, which can potentially be replaced with "good" ones in order to solve complicated problems we're facing. You also get to feel like you have some privileged knowledge and understanding of an ongoing struggle between good and evil, that brainwashed masses can't and won't comprehend, so you don't even have to try to engage them, or provide evidence.
I think Brexit played a substantial part in Rob losing his mind. Three years ago he seemed pretty devastated by his country doing something so dumb and self-damaging for no good reason. I imagine it felt more comfortable to believe, that it's actually a move against the globalists, the SJWs, and the "MSM"-s' so right wing conspirstorial bullsh*t fell on fertile ground. (BTW - "mainstream" is one word, for f*ck's sake, so shouldn't mainstream media be abbreviated as "MM"?) I doubt much can be done about it - he's found his bubble and his religion, which make him disregard the opinions of brainwashed "sheeple" like us.
Good luck to you Rob. You used to be smart, now you come across as a nutter - and not the good kind, like Yours Truly. It's heartbreaking, but hey - whatever makes you feel like you're smarter than everybody else...
