Because we have a far far right minority on this issue, that has been scared shitless by the fear marketing of the firearm CEOs and their profit lobby NRA and NSSF.
Most firearm owners are on board with reducing firearm violence including over half of republicans. It is like having 70% nation of Martin Luther King Jrs and Malalas with 5% Dillon Roofs and Bin Laden's mentality scorched earth mentality"If I cant have you, nobody can", mentality.
There are 55 million firearm owners, but only 5 million NRA members, but even with those NRA members MOST, as I said are on board with doing something. So it really amounts to a very small sect of the right that is holding our nation hostage.
40 year of fear marketing by the industry and lobbyists are why there are just enough to fuck things up.
