I am not quite sure what IOP is. CBT basically teaches you to isolate a negative thought, and think it again.
When I took the course, our therapist explained it like this:
Imagine you and your significant other are out one night. After a while you notice someone staring strongly in your direction.
What is your first thought? What the hell is this guy looking at?! And he's still staring, hard! What are you thinking?
But it turns out that:
He thinks he knows you, and he's trying to figure it out.
Now, if your initial thought was what the fuck is this guy looking at, and you get angry, your vision becomes clouded. There may very well be a completely rational reason too what you are irrationally reasoning. The same holds true for depression, if you let it cloud your vision, you'll slide down a deep dark hole very quickly.
