Just watch Black Mirror and then look at how many of the fucked up future innovations that are pretty clearly treated as bad things in-universe are being implemented in reality.
I call it Brooker's Law: "There is no idea so horrible or boneheaded that it cannot gain a significant audience willing to make it reality. Especially if it’s both."
The depressing thing is that this major flaw in human nature was pointed out by, of all things, Plan 9 from Outer Space (split in two because having the scene in one video would make sense, especially given that the film is PD)
People can latch onto ideas even when they're attached to horrible consequences, (and the ideas in Black Mirror are a hell of a lot more plausible than the Solaranite).
