I've seen people do that too.
I think one issue is, any time you start something new, that uses new muscles, you're kind of starting from scratch. And any time I take a break from working out, I struggle to catch back up to where I was. Fitness takes a lot of commitment.
Probably the best thing about having a job that requires some physical exertion is, because you have to do it, you'll be a lot more consistent. also helps that you're out of the house for hours, and can't just sit around eating all day.
I tried to get a gym buddy once, to encourage me to work out with him/her, but never really found anyone. My mother wants me to work out, but refuses to come and do it with me.
I do yard work, more because I'm used to doing it as a chore, than really enjoying it. Though I'm not sure how to make a little business out of it, because most of my neighbors are used to paying chump change for it, or doing it for chump change. Kind of hard to make money in an area where there's a neighbor who will do a half decent job for a pack of cigarettes, and a couple of beers.
Though as rainy as March has been, it's difficult to do much at all outside anyway.
