Unfounded fear.

It's a bit like (example not to scale) a guy who is terrified of swimming in the ocean because he is scared of sharks. But he's perfectly comfortable on the drive to the besch.

This is statistically speaking totally illogical - because your statistcal likelyhood of being killed by a shark is dwarfed by the likelyhood of you dying in a car wreck on the way to the beach.


Sure there are asshole cops who hate blacks - I can relate.

I rode motorcycles - with long hair and beard and the usual scruffy biker type apparel for years - back when it wasn't as mainstream as it is today - and got hassled by cops who hated bikers. I had cops do a fast u-turn to pull me over when I was obeying all traffic rules. DYB - driving while biker. I spent a weekend in jail in California for absolutely no reason at all. (My one time in jail) I get it.

I have been refused service in resuraunts and denied hotel accomodations - simply because of how I look.

I get it.

But it didn't make me fear cops. Assholes are everywhere in society. They aren't all cops.

Well the problem is the interaction, sure you are more likely to die in a car crash, you driving everyday among hundreds if not thousands of other cars. Whereas encountering a shark is very rare but the sharks are not any less deadly. There is a level of control you have in a car plus you are surrounded by roads and laws designed for safe travel. If you gave me the choice of driving on the road with hundred cars or swimming with a hundred sharks, I'm taking the cars every time.
No different with the police, interactions are limited, Sure I'm more likely to be murdered by people in my social circle but in my social circle I have a level of control. With a police interaction my level of control is almost zero, they have the power to detain me and even kill me. So I'm always going to feel safer every time surrounded by the people I know than surrounded by people I don't know who have weapons and the power to detain and kill me.
