Finally got round to 'Bates Motel' (alternate title: 'How NOT To Parent') and I really liked it. It's a very well done backstory of how Norman Bates became Norman Bates, not that he was too tightly wrapped to begin with.
It doesn't really address the events of the novel until the last few episodes, and even then it takes a pretty free hand with them - but that's OK. It was never meant to be a new version of Bloch's book or Hitchcock's film, but more of a look at the Norma/Norman relationship in all its cringe-y creepiness.
Plenty of interesting new characters flesh out the expansion of the story, such as Norman's cousin/brother (who is also Norma's nephew/son), a really cool sheriff who has doubts about Norman from the very beginning, and so on. There's also an all-too brief appearance by Rihanna (yum) as Marion Crane.
Highly recommend it.
