Ok, they’re Marxists, a group with a rather profound history of despising fascism. If those were my only choices, I’d sooner live in a Marxist state than a fascist one.

At least there's some room for wiggle room with Marxist ideology. It doesn't even have to be the sort of Marxist-Leninist Communism that thrived through much of the 20th century. Marxism is actually a label with a broad spectrum of ideologies. Even within his own lifetime, Marxism drifted far enough from Marx' ideas that he once said: “what is certain is that I myself am not a Marxist.”

Fascism? No such luck.
