When I lived in South Carolina the flags flying from the backs of "pickemup" trucks were a common sight. Most common was the rebel flag....sometimes with an American Flag and sometimes just two rebel flags flapping from the back of the truck bed. When it was Klan rally weekend there was a steady stream of trucks and vans decked out with flags.
I tended to see motorcycles, particularly Harleys, flying full-sized American flags which I always thought was a bit of a safety issue. But I don't recall the riders flying the rebel flag.
Here, it's inadvisable (but I don't think illegal) to fly the NZ flag on a vehicle that isn't on government business. You can display it - placards, window decals, bumper stickers, etc - just not fly an actual flag. The government don't want civilian vehicles to be mistaken for government ones.
But from the pictures I've seen of US pick up trucks, I REALLY don't think anyone would assume those were on government business.

Another common sight was random rundown trailers with HUGE rebel flags attached to the side...like in wallpaper style, not flying. It was the international sign for "toothless rednecks live here".
