A black bear - a 45 Colt will likely drop it in a shot or two....
A big brown - a griz or Kodiak - you would just piss it off....
He was hunting deer at the time. The .45 was intended for finishing the deer off if needed, I believe. Although he was pretty savvy and probably had the gun for protection from other predators.
