I remember that too as being a big deal.  

I haven't heard about it in years but maybe it still happens in smaller towns.

My youngest niece is a New Year's Baby for Anderson, Indiana, population ~60,000. BIL unemployed, Sis working as nurse's aide. Mooching off my parents.
