If you don't thin the herds they over-populate the area, cause all kinds of problems for the local ecology and tend to wind up in front of a Mom with five kids while she's doing 60 mph down a dark country road. We've eliminated the predators to a great extent and have to step in to replace them. In Yellowstone we see the rebound when wolves were reintroduced, but too many dumb fucks with guns shoot wolves reflexively. Well, they don't think about much anyway.
