I haven't read the story, so I have no idea where she got the gun from.  But there have been ample examples of kids killing themselves and others when they've managed to get hold of their parents' loaded guns.

Is it really difficult for these idiots to lock up tgeir guns? Or at least to not leave the fucking things lying around loaded.

I don' t know Idaho state laws.

But - here in Michigan you can be held civilly and criminally reponsible if someone uses your guns inappropriately.

The only exemption is if it is stolen from a locked gun safe.

As TGN pointed out to me, most of your states have those laws, the tragedy being that they aren’t always enforced. Like the Georgia mum who left her two kids alone in the car, and one of the kids found her gun and killed the other one. No charges were filed, because the DA felt ‘the family has suffered enough.’
