The truth is that this idea of people being just some characters is old as humanity itself. People first imagined that they were perhaps someone's dream, then they were just characters in a novel (there is even a 1991 novel "Sophie's World" that toys with the idea that even the readers of the novel are just characters that are being read by someone else), then characters in a TV show, and now characters in a video game.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
