Cathodic ray tubes? They are a pretty good bit of technology. The performance of the phosphor was much superior to the LCD type screens. The laptops of the time had LCD and their turn on and turn off time was quite slow. So, if you move your mouse, there was a trace of the mouse on an LCD screen.
LCDs had other problems as well, like light leakage, viewing angle was limited, limited color gamut.

Eventually, they improved LCD to the point they became acceptable and started to be used for desktops and TVs.
Plasma TVs was a nice one as well.

A fun thing to do is see the effect of a magnet on the electron beam.
