I think intelligence is a combination of knowledge, associative breadth, and a habit of thought that does not inwardly prefer the easiest or most emotionally self-serving of apparent answers. Plato likely had much of what his time and culture can offer of the first, as well second and third in relative abundance.
A typical product of the current American education system and culture in which it exists, IMO, largely disdain much of what our culture and time can offer of the first, deride the second as geeky, and discourage the third as uncool and not trendy, if not downright stupid fir not taking the easy path.
A product of this culture could still be very cunning and able to get ahead in competition with his peers, but it seems such cunning would probably go that far in making up for much if he were to attempt to establish any wisdom that would last beyond tenure of his culture.
