I'm part of the Commonwealth, and I believe the Queen is important.
I think it is important that the head of state is not the same as the head of government. I also believe that some sort of reverence for the office of a non-political head-of-state is required to safeguard a democracy.
The Crown is useful as long as it does its constitutional job, and enjoys some popularity. That way, if some dictator comes to power, the Crown will have the backing of the people to dissolve parliament. There are other ways to get a head-of-state. They can be elected or appointed, but that doesn't give the same level of political independence or popular mythology that may be required in a crisis.
Thats why Germany also has a president (Steinmeier), howm however many germans probably dont know.
Still there is a difference between an elected president (is elected by upper and lower house together) and some fossils back from medieval times.
I doubt however that the UK is gonna change from a constitutional monarchy into a republic soon, just for this reason.
