It might not be possible to be honest about the past if that conflicts with a cherished lie in the present.
I think its easier to be honest about the past than the present. In the present, should black people be compensated for past injustice? Are hiring quotas reverse discrimination? Is racism a relic of the past, and can therefore be dismissed?
The sides do not agree on this, because the answer means real world consequences.
