Their God denoted--something not material. The term "God" covers a bit of territory. It can be used to as force, person, a people collectively, leaders of a religion, leaders of a government, a prophet, government, one's own self, the persons of others. It depends upon how it is used in a passage/sentence. Over time they became materialistic, then their understanding became lost. That is to say- their religion changed from spiritual to materialism, and they became like the other tribes.
