I think that contemporary people have trouble articulating the faith expressed (or advocated for) in stories like those. They look for some good reason or justice - as we discussed earlier in thread the onlookers suggest as much repeatedly, and are consistently denied. The story makes it explicitly clear that there is no such ground to be had in the circumstances, but the contemporary mind seeks it out thinking (but likely not acknowledging) that this is an omission in magic book. They're wrong - it was the whole point. God is god - and that's that. The people who came up with these stories did not share our moral sentiments. The stories are meant to explain their own. They do a good job of it, and contemporary christians disagree with what they expressed. Not just the papists....lol.
