Kuchma was the Ukrainian representative to the trilateral contact group during most of the period between 2014 and 2022. Trilateral contact group was set up to negotiate a diplomatic solution to war in the Dunbass region that had been brewing since 2014, and consisted of representatives of Ukraine, Russia and the EU, and
Given the current progress of the Russian attacks in eastern Ukraine, any near term ceasefire or end to the war will almost certainly involve complex and tricky negotiations over the status and administration of Dunbass and surrounding regions. Given his long involvement, he may well have a lot of pull that would be required to achieve any sort of ceasefire or settlememt in the current war,
