NATO didn't want to give Ukraine membership right away because they believed it would be a bridge too far for Russia. They were right. It was appeasement.

The ukranians have proven no such thing, and doing so wouldn't get them into NATO at any rate.
Let's ignore that the official reasons given for slow walking ukraine are spin. Let's just tackle them for what they are..because even though they'd been used to cover appeasement as HappySkeptic notes above, they're till things that are supposed to be central to NATO inclusion. A commitment to democracy, individual liberty, and the rule of law. Unless these things are exclusively western, and doing them makes you western by default, then proving yourself to be western isn't the issue....and if this is, actually, what that means, that these things are exclusively western and doing them makes you western....how does zipping around blowing up russian armor and slaughtering russian infantry satisfy any of that? Or is that what it means to be western, and prove you're western? To curbstomp russia? Man that'd be humiliating for russia.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
not convinced. I think Biden and Scholz can turn us on if they want to. As it was with the association of the European Union

Okay I gather that English may not be your first language. For the benefit of such a doubt do you want help trying to get your above point explained/expanded upon? Cheers. Actually, NATO have given Ukraine a ‘plan of membership’ - Zelenskyy knows precisely what his country needs to do to qualify for membership in the alliance.

Actually, the whole idea of Ukraine becoming a NATO member has been brought up by Bush in his last year in office. Probably under the impression of the war in Georgia at that time. Germany and France instantly protested the idea and there are little indications, their position might have changed in the meantime. In any case, as long as war is raging there, there's absolutely no hope of Ukraine joining. It's in the treaties, that no country involved in a war may join the alliance. Same as with EU membership. Von der Leyen may have talked about a fast track, but there is no provision for a fast track. Either you fullfil the EU requirements chapter by chapter or you stay out. And Ukraine is very far removed from fullfilling the requirements.
It appears to me that the majority of the population in Eastern Ukraine wants to be part of Russia, or at least under Russian control.
