As for if the death penalty will stop others from committing murder...who knows...but it will stop the person executed from murdering anyone else.
People tend not to learn from the behavior of others. If they did, the prisons wouldn't be full to overflowing.
Punishment is something that one reflects upon, say, being in jail for the rest of one's life. As death is annihilation, there is simply "nothing" for the individual to reflect upon.
