For the vast majority of session time the commons is pretty much empty. The only time it's full is when there's an important vote, prime minster's questions (both of these because of TV cameras) and the Queen's speech (because MP's are forced to attend).
I wish I had a job where turning up was optional!
It's sometimes committee work (a genuine reason, but not as time consuming as mad3 out), but the most prevalent excuse is "constituency work" which is a flat out lie because, apart from raising issues in the chamber itself, all the work is done by staff (mostly on secondment from other parts of the civil service).
Oh and on the contest itself, If I were an African immigrant or of recent African descent I'd be very worried if Badenoch won. She very much has the manner of the small few German jews who tried to line up with the nazis and other far right volkisch parties during the Weimar republic.
