How much sense does it make to cast a black actress as the little mermaid when the original little mermaid was a white girl with red hair?

As mermaids do not exist, why not?  It's like asking why there can't be black dragons?  Or white ones?  Purple?  Pink?  With (or without) flowers??

Ok yeah but you're missing the point. Mermaids exist in fiction, and in the original movie, the little mermaid was a white girl with red hair. So the character they create, for this new movie, had better be a white girl with red hair. Makes perfect sense. Making her a black girl makes no sense.
