We don't know what "the" little mermaid looked like, either. As there is no such thing. You're falling prey to a form of the genetic fallacy, that because things were a certain way at a time in the past that they should remain that way in spite of relevant factors having changed. Jesus being portrayed as a white European and the little mermaid as a ginger both stem, in part, from a racial bias against the depiction of people of color in art and media. While we have gone a long way toward correcting that, there is still a great deal of work to be done. Even aside from the question of fairness, there is the whole issue of using counter-cultural depiction to challenge and disarm harmful stereotypes. And it's worth noting that historically, Disney has been a major offendor in this category, so challenging stereotypes fomented by Disney depictions is especially good. On the whole, it's a good thing, your implicit racism notwithstanding.
