The important word is 'entertainment'.  People aren't generally watching for a history lesson; they are watching to be entertained.

they may not watch it to learn history.  but their conception of what the past was like is nonetheless shaped at least as strongly by what they see in these entertainments as it is by occasions where they do actually resign themselves to actually learning.
