Reminds me of an episode of Wild Kratts (hosted by "The Kratt brothers", both of whom have undergraduate biology degrees) that I was watching with my daughter who, in one episode, were filming a spider devouring a monarch butterfly who had flown into its web.  I remember thinking, "Gross!", but the Kratt bros rightly pointed out that the spider needed to eat in order to survive and there were "neither good nor bad" predators.  Per the city ordinance where I live, one can own chickens, and, so, if predation is a concern, they would need to be brought inside, as the local raccoons will likely someday tire of the excess bird seed.
