Yes and I think this is living proof why that's a very good idea, as I have since learned... and what you're saying here confirms it even more... that basically you can either have it set up with an online account (the default) to have it sync across devices or a local account which is not synced and requires a bit of additional set up. So that confirms to me that it was the online password it was asking for, and which wasn't working, yet worked fine when reinstalling Windows, which is very concerning... that it failed to work when it was needed the most, because 90% of the recovery options required that password.
I don't suppose you have any theories about what went wrong? I figure it must store a local copy or hash of the online password in order for it to check at the recovery stage, before it loads Windows and/or gets online... so wherever it stores it, might have been part of what got corrupted? That's my working theory atm. But if that's the case would a local password have been any better off in the same situation, if it was stored in the same place?
But yeah, I don't use any online features of Microsoft... Office 365 etc... so I don't utilise the sync feature at all really, apart from the app it has for connecting with your phone, but I don't need that, so I don't think I would lose much by switching to a local account, I just didn't know it was a thing until now when it was too late.
