IDK. It would seem to me maybe the tree survived from before the flood because it takes a really long time from a olive tree to grow. seems to make more sense that the tree somehow survived and maybe began to sprout some leaves on a branch, that the bird saw and took. the Bible does not give specific detail out side of green leaves on an olive branch was used to indicate that the water had receded enough for life to start over.
