back into the earth. there is more water in the earth than on it. a pbs documentary/webpage claims there is 3x more water in the earth than on it.

Remember the 40 days of rain was only a partial contributor to the flood the geysers opened up all over the earth as well as the deep/oceans spewed water from it's depths. the water receded the same way.

Was the rain just to slowly kill every one?

11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, on the seventeenth day of the second month—on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. 12 And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.

"The deep" is the oceans. Think world wide tsunami while rain from 40 days and nights is flooding from inland at the same time.
