Apparently the carbon fiber pressure hull of the previous iteration of the titan submersible continuously creaked, banged and groaned even as it stayed at titanic’ s depth. Some noise is not unexpected when a submarine or submersible changes depth because changes in water pressure compresses or relax the strain on the pressure hull causing it flex, expand or contract, which can also have an effect on the interior and exterior fittings. But for a pressure hull to keep making noises when pressure is constant implies continued build up of deformation even without pressure change. That Implies the composite material of the pressure hull is gradually accumulating permanent deformation and damage.
A properly designed steel or titanium pressure hull, like those on every deep sea manned submersible in the world except4 Oceangate’s Titan, that operated within its designed limit should not exceed yield stress anywhere and thus not be subject to any accummulated damage from repeated use.
