A Catholic priest discovered the Big Bang. If the universe always existed, from infinity, how did we ever reach the present.

This is what Msgr. Georges Lemaitre (there should be a hat accent over the a in his surname, but I don't know the unicode for that) when Pius XII tried to claim that the big bang (which was so named by Hoyle who wanted to prejudice other scientists against Lemaitre's theory) proved that god existed:

As far as I can see, such a theory remains entirely outside any metaphysical or religious question. It leaves the materialist free to deny any transcendental Being… For the believer, it removes any attempt at familiarity with God… It is consonant with Isaiah speaking of the hidden God, hidden even in the beginning of the universe

He slapped Pius down hard, and to my mind, posited in turn a god that was inseparable from the universe in the same way that Spinoza saw god.

So yeah, what you think doesn't conform to reality.
