I tend to think that deterrents don't work. What works is the awareness that you highly likely be caught straight away, lack of opportunities to commit the crime easily, and a lack of motive. The motive but for sexual assault is tricky. Maybe there's ways to work on the first two?
Education would be far more effective if, as @Foxaèr pointed out, parents (and other authority figures) would quit promoting the "boys will be boys" bullshit.
There are no easy or perfect answers to this conundrum. All we can do is work towards bettering society as and where we can.
Very true. In 6th grade I walked to and from school. There was a boy in my class who lived on the other side of town and rode his bike. Almost every day he ran into the backs of my legs with his front tire. I was continually told that he did it because he liked me...in other words...the men in your life will hurt you because they love/like you.
