Could we work some blood into our metaphor for those slaughtered by the Christian armies? Maybe add some starving skin and bone peasants looking up at the opulent cathedral, stars fallen out of pictures laying in the dust, a representation of stifled science. How about sabotaging the floor boards too put a fear of falling in us.
