I understand, and synoathise with what you day. But without taking behaviour into account you end with saying silly things like Islam is a peaceful religion or Buddhists don't assault people for blasphemy. If an ideology in the abstract says X, but the followers routinely do Y, then it becomes tricky to talk about the religion being X or Y.
Guess it depends on the context of the chat and whether fine distinctions are being made between what is said and what is done.
