Sonofabitch, that's expensive! Not surprising, though. My wife's parents had refrigeration AC installed many years ago, after her family suffered with a swamp cooler for decades. The AC people installed a new drop and ran the power to the rest of the house from there...a 50 amp feed. There was a 40 amp panel that had a 70 amp panel that it fed. Completely unsafe and unlawful. When we rented that house, the renters complained that the 40 amp electrical panel was hot and that the breaker for the microwave kept shutting off. Crazy. We had a 100 amp panel installed, and a separate circuit for the microwave. I'd've felt pretty badly if the renters had been killed in a fire, that's how badly that wiring was done. We "only" dropped about $7k on the repairs.
My mom sold me one of her former rentals, as it turned out it had a very defective panel that could have easily burned the house down. Thanks, mom. I found out when a buyers inspection came back when I sold it after living in it for three years. O.o Not gonna lie, mom was a cheapskate landlord.
