Many countries have strict gun control, and correspondingly low rates of gun deaths and gun crime. It's impossible to simply deny the link between the easy availability of guns, both legal and illegal, and the resulting elevated rates of gun deaths and gun crime. The fact you hold a subjective belief that you're safer because you have one, no more makes this belief true, than people who feel they are safer because they believe a deity is looking out for them.
The evidence demonstrating the increased likelihood of being shot and killed, in households that own guns is also overwhelming, it's even higher for children of such households.
The obsession with preserving private gun ownership has little to do with the origins of the second amendment of course. As a UK citizen, I can only say that I have never heard a compelling reason for a civilian to own a handgun, and certainly not automatic or semi atomic riles.
I'd love to see some objective evidence that immorality is significantly higher in the US than other countries with strict gun control and correspondingly low rates of gun crime and gun deaths. That said, if someone held nefarious intent to harm or murder, then it surely makes sense to make guns as hard as possible to obtain.
