The moon’s South Pole is one giant crater. If the ball goes through the hoop it doesn’t matter if it touched the rim.
When the Chinese landed in the same crater but even further north no one second guessed its claim of having gotten to an even more broadly defined South Pole before everyone else. But I do think some private organization tacitly backed by government (read Japan and Israel) will now try to be the space age Amundsen or Scott and actually get within a few miles. What is more those others have also all managed to take off from the moon again and land back in earth, which arguably is considerably more challenging task due to far more stringent size, space and weight restriction.
Also let us not lose perspective of the fact that this is fundamentally achievable with early 1960s technology.
