Such national mythos certainly does not help with immunization to fascism and I think it even promotes certain complacency. However to continue your analogy US might be babe in the woods but countries like Poland, Hungary, France, Russia or Germany are adults and yet they still are getting lost in the same woods.

Financial elites and robber barons have all the reasons in the world to scare people with "communism" and label everything that they don't like as "communism".
