It's odd though, that 'not MAGA enough' is worse in their eyes than 'not MAGA at all.'

That's actually a phenomenon. In 1918, amongst the first groups the Bolsheviks went after upon seizing power were not the White Russians, but the other socialist groups they felt were not true enough -- the KRs, Kadets and so on.

In an analogy, it's like two big cats hunting the same field. Your competition is not the prey, it's the other predator. Kill him and you get to eat it all, in your own good time.
