When I lived in Africa at one time the sugar started disappearing from the pantry stock at the house at an alarming rate. I strongly suspected the maid was stealing it, but couldn't prove it (this was long before tiny webcams, etc.). So I thought of something: when the maid came back from her weekend off I told her that I had a sangoma (witch doctor} come in over the weekend to exorcise the sugar stealing demon from the pantry. And that the sangoma had said no sugar would ever be nicked again because Tokelosh (a bad-tempered dwarf god) had taken up residence in the pantry. He lived there now.
It worked literally like a charm! Not one gram of sugar ever again went missing after that day!
There was a drawback, though: the maid was so scared of Tokelosh that from that day forward she refused to ever go into the pantry again!
