My sister brought this up in conversation last night. Apparently they have been auditing all school cafeterias recently. The thing is they are supposed to be reviewing the cafeteria's food to make sure it meets USDA guidelines (aka rubbish), home brought lunches are not supposed to be part of it. If a kid only brings cheetos for lunch, they aren't supposed to be able to say anything.
She had an interesting story about her school though. Due to the auditing the cafeteria becomes obsessed with being in compliance and does not care about the students. According to the state a student can only have five items, which I am assuming is based on the USDA guidelines. The problem is a single piece of food may count as more than one item, a slice of pizza is 4. At my sister's school one of the cafeteria workers took carrots off a little girl's plate because she had 6 items and told her she was not allowed to have it. The girl was left with little else to eat but it met the item count and that was all that mattered.
