I can sort of see where they're coming from; I can appreciate the message that just because a person had molested kids in the past, they deserve a second chance. That's sort of a big reason why I support Roman Polanski; the fact that his victim, Samantha Geimer, supports his release is another big one. But the fact is that the cases aren't very similar. While Roman's line of work doesn't necessarily have to involve a lot of work with little girls (fortunately, he doesn't really do movies with little girls in them; if memory serves, the only film he's done since with a pubescent girl in any prominent role was 2005's Oliver Twist), churches aren't really like that; if memory serves, didn't Jesus say "let the little children come unto me"? That's how the faith is really spread: carry it on to the kids. And, besides, it's not even like this is in the past: While there really isn't much evidence that Roman has molested any underaged girls since 1977 (and even during the trial, everyone involved didn't see him as too big a threat to California's prospective nymphets), this guy was convicted of statutory rape in 2009, and can't at least find a job that doesn't involve a lot of contact with kids.
